License plates in the Cape have a weird disconnect with reality. There doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason behind their allocation. I think (and this may be completely inaccurate) that they were allocated originally according to the size of the municipality. Hence we have CA for Cape Town and CC for Kimberley. I think CB belongs to East London (corrected: Port Elizabeth, sorry to Dave and Ian) but with our new provincial divisions the Eastern Cape has since moved over to an EC suffixed license plate system. So who knows. Anyway, this allocation strategy was (in my opinion) destined to be a failure. It does make for a rather obvious cure to the boredom most people associate with long road trips. For example, where the hell do CZ cars hail from?
If something's wrong on the list below, or if you have something to add, then please get hold of me. If you don't know my email address then figure it out. I'd like only actual sightings. If you think you once saw a CZZZZ license plate then I'd rather not add it here. As it is, I'm likely to only include it once I've actually seen it. Unless I really trust you ;-)
The only other "resource" I've located for these things seems to reflect a South Africa from another era. But it seems reasonably accurate, at least as far as the bits I know are concerned. It can be found here.
